Thoughts for dialog from candidate Joe Price
Why?
Why? While it’s easy for some to cast doubt on someone’s intentions, former ABC Defense Department reporter John McWethy was known for asking questions, a lot of questions and they often began with the word ‘why’.
In 2003, John McWethy was the commencement speaker at DePauw University. In his address to the graduates he shared this;
"The word 'why' is, in my view, the most powerful word in the English language. It is the driving force of my profession, and it's also the driving force and at the heart of your professors, creative sciences, honest politicians, and of good parents,"
"Don't stop asking the word 'why' just because you're leaving DePauw. All institutions, all endeavors, all relationships are improved by a good scrubbing using the word 'why.' In democracy it is the question we must all constantly be asking our government and our leaders. It is not unpatriotic to question the government; it is unpatriotic not to."
John McWethy believed honest politicians embraced the word ‘why’ both when including it in a question and when being asked a question. I agree and along with that I add this life lesson which I have taught each of my children; “tell the truth and fear no one, tell a lie and fear everyone.” Anyone that contemplating a run at office beware, the established political system resists and criticizes change, especially change from outsiders who questions ‘why.’
Again I look forward to seeing many of you throughout this summer as I walk door to door. When you see me please take a moment to stop and talk as I will welcome and embrace your questions of ‘why.’ I have a MAD passion for Broadview Heights, MAD as in Making A Difference. You too can choose to Make A Difference. Please consider joining forces with one or more of the many organizations that are MAD (Making A Difference) about Broadview Heights and together we will positively impact all who live, work and own a business in Broadview Heights.
